Social Media Addiction

Everyone of us has some kind of addiction. Social media addiction can be as simple as going online every minute or hour a day. It’s hard not to; share with others when something exciting happens, take a picture when a ‘kodak’ moment shows itself, check out daily blogs, also check out the latest video post of official music videos or daily to weekly web show posts. Statistics prove that social media has become addictive for children and adults all around the world.

After a study given by www.retrevo.com, a consumer electronics shopping website, shows how much control social media has on others lives. According to their research, 27% of the respondents under the age 35 go on Facebook more than 10 times per day, while 39% check their Twitter updates more than 10 times. 36% of respondents under the age 35 tweet after sex and 34% on a date. 40% of the respondents under 35 tweet while driving. A graph of the results can be found on http://www.dreamgrow.com/is-social-media-addictive/.

Another experiment was given this past September. Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in central Pennsylvania set up a ‘Blackout’, which is an experiment to ban social media. The experiment lasted for a week. Students and faculty cooperated with this experiment, all realizing just how serious their social media addiction was. Even though it just lasted a week, people cooperating became irritated and would sneak to check their social networking profiles on their mobile phones.

Social media has weaved its way into our daily lives. We would never know how bad we have it for our social networking sites, video sharing, blogs, until it’s taken away from us.

Companies That Shy Away from Marketing

Some companies are afraid to market themselves. They believe that marketing is not in their budget. They also believe that it takes too much time. Marketing does take some time and it may wear on the patience of the company, but it’s a great look for the company when used well. Using social networking sites well can get a company on the right track to effective marketing and reaching their customers.

A company as small as a local restaurant and lounge is a great example. Some of those small businesses get recognition solely through ‘Word of Mouth’, mostly from friends of the owners. The businesses might have a profile on a social network or two, such as Facebook or Twitter. Unfortunately, the only way anyone would know about these profiles, would be through ‘Word of Mouth’. Since businesses like these are so small, an extra push is needed to get recognition they deserve.

A few ways to better market your company:

*Set up profiles where your customers are and post upcoming events every week.

*Focus on your company website, fliers, business cards, and menus. These are important to branding your company in the right light. Consistent messaging will help customers remember you and your business.

*Don’t just cater to one demographic! Stay consistent, but add something different every week to attract all types of target audiences.

Shying away from marketing is not the answer if a business wants to gain success. Marketing through social media and more benefits a company greatly. It builds the business’s reputation and gains popularity.

Social Media makes it easier for artists

Many of us are artists-be it graphic designer, web designer, photographer, or illustrator. We all have hard copy portfolios to showcase our work to future employers or clients. Having a hard copy portfolio is great, but an online portfolio is better. Social media allows artists to conveniently showcase their work to millions of employers and clients all around the world. Here are some examples of online portfolio websites:

FigDig.com – Free online portfolio for illustrators, graphic designers, and photographers. They also have the option to showcase their work in HD by creating their own flash website for free.

Carbonmade.com – Free online portfolio that’s easy on the eyes, light, and fun. If the individual is indecisive about showcasing their work, they can try the free demo.

Creativeshake.com – Online portfolio for graphic designers. Offers a limited free membership. The website offers a list of jobs. Website has special deals too. If the designer contributes tips and articles, they can win an extra four months free membership. Only  if they (tips and articles) are published.

There are many online portfolio website to choose from, but these three are the most popular. Where are you showcasing your work?

Employers Using Social Media

Individuals are using social media to connect with old friends, meeting new friends, and search for employment. Employers also tend to use social media to get some more background information on current employees and potential employees. Yes, basic background checks are still being used, but social networking sites are more convenient to see how the current or future employee carries themselves.

Employers are taking social media background checks very seriously. No more ‘googling’ information on current and potential employees. They are now hiring professionals to do background checks through social media. A percentage of 8, have fired individuals that they believed were putting there company in a negative light through social media.

“I personally think we’re moving away from the one-page resume. I think we’re moving toward where your online history is your resume.” explained Max Durcker, Social Intelliengence Corp. CEO. Social Intelligence Corporation is just one of the companies that specifically work in social media background checks. They have scans that search the internet for misrepresentation by their company’s future and current employees.

Some might find social media background checks invasive and yes, it might seem like it is, but legally it isn’t. Social networking sites, photo sharing, and video sharing; are made for the public. We do have the option of making our social media profiles private, but in all actuality we can’t fully control what others see. The best thing to do to avoid being denied employment or being ‘let go’ of a job, is simply close out all accounts. Realistically, the second to best thing to do, is to just make all profiles and accounts tasteful so they won’t have any negative effects on employment, future or current.

Social Networking Websites; It’s not only for the younger demographics

Baby boomers and senior citizens are using internet more than you would think. They now have become apart of the statistic of social networking users. Facebook, Twitter, and many more social networking sites have had users ages 50 and older, double in a years time. Of course the younger demographic has taken over social networking sites, but the elderly are jumping on the bandwagon also.

Senior citizens are learning so much especially at recreation centers for seniors. These centers are teaching our seniors basic computer information. The seniors start to learn more and more, allowing them to be on the younger generations level. This makes it easier for them to adapt to the world wide web and create profiles and accounts on social networking websites. Like the younger demographics, senior citizens use social networks to find others from their past. They also search for communities that have similar beliefs or thoughts.

The growth of senior citizens using social networking sites has dramatically increased, especially on Facebook. It has become one of the most popular social networking sites when it comes to senior citizens. Growing up the only way to communicate for the baby boomers was through the telephone system or face-to-face interaction. Now they can they are able to speak to people they knew when they were growing up to people they went to college with if they attended college.

Social media is for everyone, from the youngest to the oldest. It will never go away. When our generation become senior citizens we will have to learn about the new offers of the world wide web, because the older we get, the more complex social media will get.
