Everyone of us has some kind of addiction. Social media addiction can be as simple as going online every minute or hour a day. It’s hard not to; share with others when something exciting happens, take a picture when a ‘kodak’ moment shows itself, check out daily blogs, also check out the latest video post of official music videos or daily to weekly web show posts. Statistics prove that social media has become addictive for children and adults all around the world.
After a study given by www.retrevo.com, a consumer electronics shopping website, shows how much control social media has on others lives. According to their research, 27% of the respondents under the age 35 go on Facebook more than 10 times per day, while 39% check their Twitter updates more than 10 times. 36% of respondents under the age 35 tweet after sex and 34% on a date. 40% of the respondents under 35 tweet while driving. A graph of the results can be found on http://www.dreamgrow.com/is-social-media-addictive/.
Another experiment was given this past September. Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in central Pennsylvania set up a ‘Blackout’, which is an experiment to ban social media. The experiment lasted for a week. Students and faculty cooperated with this experiment, all realizing just how serious their social media addiction was. Even though it just lasted a week, people cooperating became irritated and would sneak to check their social networking profiles on their mobile phones.
Social media has weaved its way into our daily lives. We would never know how bad we have it for our social networking sites, video sharing, blogs, until it’s taken away from us.
